December 2015 Newsletter12/17/2015 New School Tech Resources The following teachers have been asked to help out the technology department. They will be providing minor tech support, and emergency help as they can. They have also been instructed that they are teachers first, and not to interrupt their classes. So, we do ask that you respect their classroom time. We are excited and grateful to these teachers for their willingness to help out. During the training, I was asked if there where any kiosk apps for i-Ready and other programs used in the classroom. I wasn’t sure so I began a search for any of those types of apps. I am sad to say there were none available. To solve this problem, several apps have since been created for the Google web store, specifically for DCSD. They include i-Ready Kiosk App, DCSD Timeclock, and DCSD Lunch App. All of these apps have been added to the Kiosk menu for the Chromebook. So you no longer need to login in to access those web pages. This means that teachers using Chromebooks can preload i-Ready and then just have their students login and logout to the i-Ready website, and never have to login into the actual computer. As a result, students will only need to remember their i-Ready password and not the computer login password too. For staff and those who have to clock in using Timeclock, you can use the DCSD Timeclock app loaded in your Google Chrome Browser apps. This means that the app can run on any computer that has Chrome installed. It will also load independent of your browser. If there are other apps that you would like to have made available, contact me and I will see that they get created. The only problem with the Chromebook apps is that they do not have a close option. The only way to close them right now is to shut down the Chromebook by holding down the power button. This is an issue that I am working to resolve. My how times have changed, or have they? The Flipped Classroom Are you tired of the same old teaching style? Are you tired of disengaged students, assignments not being turned in, and students that don’t care. Have you ever thought of "flipping" your classroom? In a flipped classroom, the teacher makes a video recording of class lectures and notes and makes them available online for students to watch as homework. This allows you to devote more time to help students perfect the skills needed to succeed. It allows you as the teacher the flexibility to provide differentiated instruction. Your students will be able to do more and become excited and engaged in the learning process. You may also have a few questions like, "I don't have time to make all those videos," or "how do I even make a video"? You may be wondering how to ensure that all your students get access to the internet. If you want answers to these questions and many others, I have provided a link to an article and a website that can help you get started on the road to "flipping"your class. Click on this article from the Creative Educator with some information that can help you get started with "flipping" your class. Click here for resources on the Flipped Classroom.
